Complete PC backup failes on Vista (error 0x80070057)

Hi,

I'm trying to make a complete backup of my C: drive on another internal HDD (E:). I've tried several time and each time the backup process fails with the same error: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057).

I've checked the article on the storage team blog but it does not address this issue (same error code is mentioned but not for complete PC backup).

I'm running 32 bits Vista SP2. Both drives are 500 GB NTFS. I formated drive E: before backup but didn't help. I checked C: and E: with chkdsk /R and did not find any errors. I also tried the "backup files" instead of "backup computer" and it worked fine. Complete backup however, seems to fail every time at the same location (the VHD file after failure is always a 105GB file).

Somebody on another thread suggested to run system file checker (sfc /scannow) but it didn't solve the problem.

I tried to create a log according to instructions in another tread but something is wrong as no log file is created: I created this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ASR\LogFileSetting with two values, LogPathName (set to D:\asr.log) and EnableLogging (set to 1).

I didn't find anything useful in the event logs or anywhere else to diagnose the problem.

I'm running out of ideas. How can I find and fix the problem?

Thanks a lot,
AlefSin

SBS2008 Standard Complete PC Restore failed with (0x80070495)

Urgent help needed!  I am trying to recover my SBS2008 standard machine after
a RAID controller failure.  I removed the dead adaptec 51645 and am using 2
1TB RAID1 on the ICH9R.  I then proceeded to initiate Windows complete PC
restore with the SBS2008 standard disc.

The old RAID on the 51645 is only 720GB large so the new 1TB RAID1 should be
large enough for the restore.

But I keep on getting "The Volume ID could not be found. (0x80070495)"
error.  Nothing seems to be helping.

So please help!!!!

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

SO I'm trying (and was successful for a week or so) to backup all the Virtual Machines on ,y Server 2012 Hyper-V host using a WBADMIN Script like this

WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:\\Server\Share\DayofWeek\ -hyperv: "9765f02f-042e-4d72-9fd8-13faededa93d","8f4e8672-2632-43b2-b83e-ed7e63ec0ecb" -Quiet

However it fails with event log ID 519 - The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎06‎-‎10T21:00:08.077677000Z' has failed to back up volume(s) ''. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

And the backup log says

System state backup fails

Hi,

I've a Windows Server 2008 R2 which host an Oracle database.
After upgrading Oracle to the latest version Windows Server Backups fails with error: "System Writer not found in backup".
Application Event Log show Event ID 517 with description "Error code 2155347997 (Operation aborted before completion)".
"vsstrace" shows no errors.
"diskshadow list writers" shows something interesting:

* WRITER "System Writer" - ID processo di scrittura = {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220} - ID istanza processo di scrittura = {0d5d5490-9019-4370-9659-f27b92c3e603} - Supporto eventi di ripristino = FALSE - Condizioni di ripristino processo di scrittura = VSS_WRE_NEVER - Metodo di ripristino = VSS_RME_RESTORE_AT_REBOOT_IF_CANNOT_REPLACE - Necessità di riavvio dopo il ripristino = TRUE - File esclusi: + Componente "System Writer:\System Files" - Nome: System Files - Percorso logico: - Percorso completo: \System Files - Didascalia: System Files - Tipo: VSS_CT_FILEGROUP [2] - Selezionabile: FALSE - Di primo livello: TRUE - Notifica al termine del backup: FALSE - Percorsi interessati dal componente: - C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto - C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform ...
- c:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\bin - d:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\bin

It looks to me Oracle registered "d:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\bin" as System Component.
But that folder does not exist. D: is actually the CD-ROM drive...

Can I remove "d:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\bin" from the System State file list?

The official position seems to be "no, reinstall the application" which I wuold really like to avoid...

  Corrado

RESOLVED - Backup failing on Server 2008 R2 - system writer missing

$

System is non production, running server 2008 enterprise (localized in Dutch).

"Bare Metal Recovery" selected, backups scheduled daily using Windows server back-up.

Backup destination is a local disk, with plenty of disk space still free.

backups running fine up and until 6 june.

At that date we installed SQL server 2008 R2 and Advantage ADS (other database server).

I recently noticed that the backups have been failing since 6/6.

Investigation performed so far :

-> error message in backup wizard : "the system writer is not found in the backup"

-> confirmed that system writer is not in the writer list when doing vssadmin list writers in a cmd box.

-> found a gazillion articles on google indicating wrong permissions on %windir%\winsxs\Filemaps\*

reference article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272

most of these also mention problems with CAPI2 (cryptographic provider) but I see no evidence of that in my application log, only event ID 517 is present, indicating error 2155347997.

I follow the article instructions anyway and update file permissions but system writer is still not listed.

Then the article mentions that Event ID 8213, indicating permission issues, might be showing, but it's NOT.

registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl is already on 1

-> NO log is created under C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\ during the backup attempt.

-> I was able to restore the winsxs\filemaps folder from the last successfull backup without any problem.
log file was created during that restore.

-> I'm not a big hero with process monitor but quickly comparing outputs to a working machine yields no obvious culprit. It's too verbose to really dig in without advanced knowledge of what you're looking for

-> using vsstrace.exe I get this output repeating over and over.
There are error messages in there but I have no idea what they mean and searching the net doesn't give me anything :

notice that also the BITS writer is missing, but the others seem just fine ...

-> followed instructions in this article : http://briandrab.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!B69C8C4D664E3F01!252.entry?sa=609120164

moved all files under filemaps to a different folder but that didn't work either so i just restored them.

-> I probably could restore the backup from 6/6 completely and reinstall sql + ads, but I want to find out what is happening before I do that, I find not much info on the web over what mechanism makes the writers visible exactly.
This would be a lot of work with no guarantee that things don't break again.

At this point I welcome any suggestion, but i'd like to see some arguments as to why it would be a good idea, not just try this or try that, as I'm trying to understand the whole vss setup a little better.

UPDATE : BITS writer came back in stable state after reboot, so only system writer is still missing.

Volsnap Event ID: 25 and Loss of Previous Backups

I have a Windows Small Business Server 2008 machine being backed up using the Windows Server Backup utility.  The backups are being made to two external USB attached 1TB drives.  Each drive is rotated out weekly, meaning that one drive is attached one week, then the other drive is swapped in the following week, ad infinitum for the best part of a year.  Two backups were being made each day to the attached drive, one at 12pm and one at 9pm.

About two weeks ago it appears that one of the two drives reached capacity and began shedding the oldest backups, as confirmed by the VOLSNAP Event ID: 33 entries in the System Event log.  On the second day, however, ALL shadow copies on the attached backup driver (volume) were deleted, as confirmed by a single VOLSNAP Event ID: 25.  (See below for both Event ID message contents.)  Unfortuneately, neither events were noted until the drive was swapped out with the other drive and some how the problem was propagated to the second drive, resulting in the deletion of all shadow copies on the second drive, too.

The end result... BOTH drives lost ALL previous backups leaving only the most recent full backup and no clue as to why it happened or how to prevent it from happening again.  Virtually no older backup file versions could be recovered.

I was under the impression that, by design, the WSB utility would only start deleting the oldest backups (on a full drive) in order to make room for the newer backups.  Granted, had I been keeping attention, I would have actually swapped out the full drives before the actually got full, so that NO data was deleted.

If I'm to continue using the Windows Server Backup utility, I need to know what happened and how to absolutely prevent it from happening again.  I never expected to loose BOTH backups at the same time, and due to budget restraints, two rotating backup drives seemed a logical solution.

Here is text from the two VOLSNAP Event ID messages found in the System Log:

Event ID: 25
Source:  volsnap
Level: Error
Description:  The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

Event ID: 33
Source: volsnap
Level: Information
Description: The oldest shadow copy of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} was deleted to keep disk space usage for shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} below the user defined limit.

NOTE:  Though I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the situation, the server is configured to make two snapshots a day of two volumes on the server, however, when I looked at the Shadow Copy settings I couldn't quite be sure if the VSS wasn't somehow also making snapshots on the two external drives, even though I haven't specified VSS to do so.  None show up on the two replacement drives I'm now using, so I'd say not.

Information on how to prevent this from happening again would greatly be appreciated.  (I'll be making sure no backup drive gets even close to being full from now on, that's for sure!)

Thanks,

Joseph.

Check a backup of specific files/folders with wbadmin

Hello everyone!

I would be glad if someone could help me to clarify if it's possible to check a backup availability of specific files or folders with wbadmin tool.

For example, I'm able to restore some directory from a backup (assuming that I already know that it persists there):

wbadmin start recovery -version:06/02/2013-13:37 -itemType:File -items:C:\Users\Public\Music -recursive

But is it possible to check if this directory ("C:\Users\Public\Music" in my example) were included to one or another backup version? If it is, please let me know how exactly.

Thank you!

Hello,

I am attempting to complete a backup on a W2K8 STD server to an external USB drive. The devices are 120GB Samsung S1 Minis. I cannot complete either on-demand or scheduled backups to these devices. When I attempt a backup an error is almost immediately generated and the backup stops.

The error displayed in WSB is:

"One of the backup files could not be created. Detailed Error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

A System event log error is also generated:

Removing a broken disk from Windows 2008 R2 "Destination list"

$

I am running backup of a Windows 2008 R2 server by rotating 4 disks – always 2 are out of the office.

Now one of the discs has broken and been replaced. I now want to remove / delete the broken disc from the “Destination” disc list.

I have looked into the command “wbadmin enable backup [-removetarget:<BackupTargetDisk>]” but as I can see this command
needs the backup disk to be connected to the server? (in the help info it is listed: “
Requires you to specify the location as a
disk identifier” – which I think means it has to be connected to get the disk identifier?)
I am looking for a command that let me use ex. “serverName 2013_08_09_10:00 Disk_03” as parameter for removing the disk.
Hopefully this is possible?
Regards
Harald
